I don't know about your field and the schools you're asking about, but the
situation really varies. My department usually has 3 years of funding for
students and you may or may not get renewal. What's really bad is: you may
get your appointment staing for a year, but the budget cuts may cause your
appointment to terminate after half of a year.
This is the situation I'm in right now. My department announced a budget cut and
cut off my funding after one semester, when my appointment letter was for
one year. The worst is they made this announcement way too late for me to look
for other assistantships on campus.
