In some schools, experimental works usually involve devices or techniques, which are at some risks of safety. I don't know how this issue is treated everywhere. What I saw in Taiwan was, nobody cared when the machines were run. Safety risks would only be discussed when something happens... Surely, you can always go to laboratory and run experiments at any time. Nobody cared... I also saw some schools (not in Taiwan) dealing with this issue differently. The rules were quite strict that no experiments were allowed to be performed without any qualified experienced technicians standing by. This means no experimental work within non-working hours, weekends and public holidays. However, if you go to school on 9 o'clock Monday morning, you are welcome to do your work with assistance. The schools are still open on the other time, but only offices and computers are allowed to be used. Certainly, data processing, analyses and thinking all take time. Does the latter make any research not efficient? Will the former get better efficiency? It depends on the situations and the researchers. For myself, I cannot see any problem with the latter arrangement. That just means the students have to plan their time better, and that is even better for the researchers themselves ---- they can have better social lives, healthy and natural tempo. The most important thing is the safety issue is seriously concerned. Additionally, the energy cost is reasonably lowered down because everybody working together within daylight hours.
