Rule 5
The Orioles selected a relief pitcher from the Tigers' organization in
today's Rule 5 draft. His name is Randor Bierd (sounds like a villain in a
James Bond flick) and he's a 23-year-old right-hander who finished 2007 at
Double-A Erie.
Bierd was 1-1 with a 2.05 ERA in 15 games at the low Single-A level before
moving up to Erie, where he went 3-2 with a 3.35 ERA and one save in 27
games, including three starts. He allowed 31 hits, walked 10 and struck out
52 in 45 2/3 innings. He surrendered only one home run.
Bierd is 12-18 with a 4.39 ERA in four minor league seasons. He's made 28
starts among his 95 appearances, striking out 261 and walking 79 in 260 1/3
innings.
If he sticks with the club, it'll most likely be as a middle reliever and
mop-up guy. I can't imagine that the Orioles envision him taking over
eighth-inning set-up duties.
There's always the chance that the club tries to swing a trade in spring
training so they can send him to the minors instead of returning him to the
Tigers
