Re: [外電] Meet the high school coach who gave …
-----------------------------------------------
"I don't think he weighed 100 pounds," Griffith said. "I'm telling you,
he was a little-bitty something, but there he was, directing traffic,
in charge of his team. He'd fight you tooth and nail. Whatever you threw
at him, he'd stand up to it."
Griffith has never believed in so-called star players, and says he never
had a player average more than 16 points per game. His team pressed and ran,
and pressed some more. In Johnson's senior year at St. Augustine's, the
roster was 15 deep, and Griffith played all 15. Johnson did not start until
the state playoffs. In the quarterfinals, he stole the ball at midcourt,
went hard to the basket, then fired a behind-the-back pass to a teammate for
a score.
Johnson went back on defense, and stole the ball again.
"He was scared to death I was going to get on him about the behind-the-back
pass, but I let that one slide," Griffith said.
。」Griffith
Undrafted by the NBA, Johnson was going to get his master's degree, but got
a call from the SuperSonics. He made the team, beginning a 16-year NBA career
that included a title-winning basket against the Knicks, and non-stop
overachieving. Bernard Griffith said the greatest challenge in coaching
Avery Johnson was finding new ways for him to work, because he'd always do
everything Griffith asked, and more. The old-school coach worked for Johnson
as an assistant coach in player development when Johnson coached in Dallas.
"It's something we'll visit (again)," Johnson said. Griffith makes no
guarantees about what the Nets will do next year, but he knows that Johnson
has no fear in taking the team over, and no doubt that they will take on the
coach's personality, just as Johnson took on Bernard Griffith's.
Griffith
"Their toughness will improve. The way they attack the game will improve.
The defense will improve. There's no way they won't be successful," Griffith
said.
Bernard Griffith dislikes much of what he sees in sports these days,
hot-dogging and self-promotion chief among them. The cheapness of
superlatives is another major irritant. To Bernard Griffith, "pretty good"
is high praise. It means you are getting after it, imp roving every day,
putting all you have into the process of becoming better at what you do.
The man who shaped Avery Johnson's competitive template is ready to issue
his report card.
"I think he's pretty good," Bernard Griffith said. "He's got room to get
better, but he's already pretty good."
