Winter meetings over, New York Yankees, Mets, not done yet

吃下A.J.
理想上,洋基打算排出CC Sabathia、Burnett、Pettitte、Chien-Ming Wang and

LAS VEGAS -- Baseball's winter meetings wrapped up Thursday, but the Yankees
and Mets kept on working. The time spent on the planes that took Yankees GM
Brian Cashman and Mets GM Omar Minaya out of town was about the only
inactivity either man had all week.
Thursday's activity for Cashman started early, as he left in the morning
before the start of the Rule 5 draft so he could pay a visit to Andy Pettitte
and resolve that situation. The Yankees want Pettitte to know they have a
spot for him, but that the spot won't be there forever.
They've offered him $10 million for one year -- a pay cut of $6 million from
his 2008 salary -- and so far he hasn't accepted it. If he doesn't accept it
now, the Yankees are prepared to move on and offer that final rotation spot
to someone else, such as Ben Sheets or Randy Wolf.
The Yankees believed last night they were the front-runners to sign
free-agent right-hander A.J. Burnett, to whom they'd offered a five-year
contract worth between $80 million and $85 million. The Braves were battling
hard for Burnett and were sending signals yesterday they would up their offer
to five years and about $80 million, but Yankee decision-makers expressed
confidence Burnett would choose their offer.
Ideally, the Yankees would sign Burnett and Pettitte to go with CC Sabathia,
Chien-Ming Wang and Joba Chamberlain in their rotation. But if they can't get
Burnett, they'd turn their attention to Derek Lowe, and if they can't get
Pettitte to take their offer, they'll turn their attention to Sheets or Wolf
or maybe even give the spot to Phil Hughes again.
There are some in the Yankees organization who believe the team's lineup is
short on power, that the only real home run threat is Alex Rodriguez. That's
why the Yankees can't be completely ruled out of the Mark Teixeira race. They
would jump in on Teixeira if all of their pitching plans fell apart. It's
also why they can't be ruled out of a pursuit of Manny Ramirez, whom they
could bring in on a shorter-term deal even if they did get Burnett.
After a snag developed Thursday morning, by evening the Yankees' efforts to
acquire center fielder Mike Cameron from the Milwaukee Brewers were back on.
The deal stalled when the Yankees asked the Brewers for some money to help
pay Cameron's $10 million salary. The Brewers were, understandably, perturbed
since that request came within 48 hours after the Yankees signed their best
pitcher for $161 million. But the sides were talking again later in the day,
negotiating the amount of money and the names of the other players to be
involved in the deal.
As for the Mets, they remain hopeful of re-signing lefty Oliver Perez, though
they believe that could take a while because his agent, Scott Boras, has been
busy working on bigger deals for Lowe and Teixeira.
If they can't get Perez, their free-agent fallback options include Wolf and
Jon Garland. The Cubs are also still trying to unload Jason Marquis, and
while the Mets passed on a deal that would have brought them Marquis for
Aaron Heilman (who has since been dealt to the Mariners), a Marquis deal
could get resurrected in some form.
Minaya is already getting calls from other teams, including the Detroit
Tigers, asking him if he's interested in "flipping" right-handed reliever
Sean Green, who came over Wednesday night in the deal that brought in J.J.
Putz and sent Heilman to Seattle. The Mets like Green for their bullpen, but
they're willing to listen.
As for Putz, whose agent suggested Wednesday as news of the deal broke that
his client wouldn't like to be a setup man, the Mets say they're not worried
about that being a problem.
"There will be a time that we sit down with J.J. and explain to him how we
plan to use him," Minaya said. "But we've spoken with him, and he's all about
competing and trying to win a championship."
Minaya also admitted interest in free-agent outfielder Raul Ibanez, who's
also drawing interest from the Angels, Cubs and Phillies.
"He's a quality guy and a good player," Minaya said. "He drives in 100 runs a
year. But before I start moving my dollars on offense, I've got to move more
of my dollars on our pitching."
The Yankees lost four players in the major-league phase of the Rule 5 draft
-- infielder Reggie Corona (picked by Seattle), lefty Zach Kroenke (Florida),
right-hander Jason Jones (Minnesota) and right-hander Ivan Nova (San Diego).
The teams that picked those players each owe the Yankees $50,000 and must
keep the drafted player on their major-league rosters for the entire 2009
season or offer him back to the Yankees for $25,000.
The Mets drafted two relievers in the major-league phase -- hard-throwing
right-hander Rocky Cherry from Baltimore and sidearming right-hander Darren
O'Day from the Angels. Both will have a chance to compete for spots in the
big-league bullpen come spring training. If they don't stay on the roster all
year, the Mets must offer them back for half-price.
