[新聞] Johnny Damon's foot a real pain, could mean DL

PITTSBURGH - Johnny Damon was battling so much pain in the arch of his left
foot on Sunday, he said he "just couldn't move," giving him "no chance" at
the plate or at running down balls in the outfield.
Damon was out of the lineup Tuesday night with the same problem, the fourth
game he has missed this season. He hopes to return today or tomorrow,
although he wouldn't rule out the possibility of a trip to the disabled list.
"Hopefully I can go (tonight), but I can't promise anything right now," Damon
said. "I definitely need my legs to help this team."
Damon hasn't had any tests done yet, but he doesn't think it's a case of
plantar fasciitis, the injury that ruined Jason Giambi's year in 2007.
PAIN IN THE NECK: Hideki Matsui was not in the outfield mix this week because
of his swollen left knee, but after he awoke Tuesday with a stiff neck, he
was removed from the pinch-hitting mix, too.
Matsui's knee, which was drained of fluid last week, will prevent him from
playing the outfield during this series. And even though he said it feels a
little better, he wouldn't rule out the possibility of needing offseason
surgery like he had on his right knee this winter.
"At this point, I don't know," Matsui said. "I just have to hope that that's
not the case."
SMALL WORLD: Aaron Small, one of the Yankees' unlikely heroes of the 2005
season, was in Pittsburgh this week to run some church baseball clinics for
inner-city kids, so he dropped by PNC Park before Tuesday night's game to
catch up with his old teammates.
Small went 10-0 in 2005, becoming just the fourth pitcher in history to win
double-digit games without suffering a loss. He retired in May 2007 after
trying to catch on with Seattle.
"I haven't looked back," said Small, who has been running baseball clinics in
his hometown of Loudon, Tenn., and doing speaking engagements with youth
groups and churches. "But just getting to tell the stories, it's like, 'Did
this really happen?'"
JOBA TIME: Joba Chamberlain makes his fifth start tonight, looking for his
first victory as a starter. Chamberlain has taken a no-decision in each of
his first four starts, although his ERA since joining the rotation is
2.46.... Kyle Farnsworth said he was "fine" after getting three stitches on
his right hand on Sunday....Phil Hughes, who turned 22 Tuesday, will begin
his throwing program today in Tampa....Ian Kennedy's next start will come
Saturday for Class-A Tampa, where he will throw 65-75 pitches....LHP Billy
Traber was optioned to Triple-A Scranton to make room for Justin Christian.
