The Yankees plan to have their next manager in place by tomorrow and
indications last night were that Joe Girardi would be selected to replace Joe
Torre.
General manager Brian Cashman refused comment. But people familiar with his
thinking said Girardi would be his choice instead of Don Mattingly or Tony
Pena.
The 43-year-old Girardi played four seasons for the Yankees, was Torre's
bench coach in 2005 and in 2006 managed the Florida Marlins. He led the
Marlins to 78 victories and was named National League manager of the year.
But Girardi was fired because of disputes with team management.
Cashman is believed to have made his recommendation to the Steinbrenner
family yesterday.
If they approve - and every in dication is they will endorse any selection
made - a contract will be swiftly negotiated. An announcement is expected no
later than tomorrow at Yankee Stadium.
One potential roadblock could be the affinity team owner George Steinbrenner
has for Mattingly, a former team captain. But with the 77-year-old
Steinbrenner in decline, his sons have assumed control of the organization.
Hal Steinbrenner has focused on the business side, his brother Hank on
baseball operations.
Hank Steinbrenner said last week that he and Cashman favor the same candidate.
Mattingly was considered the front-runner at the start of the process. But
Cashman has long admired Girardi's approach and philosophies.
If the Yankees hire Girardi, it could mean an end to Mattingly's association
with the team. A star player for 14 seasons, Mattingly became a
spring-training instructor before accepting a position on Torre's staff
before the 2004 season.
Mattingly said that last week that he became a coach with an eye on managing.
Retaining him in some capacity would indicate a lack of faith in Girardi.
Pena has said he would be willing to return as a coach, and it is likely he
will have a spot on the staff of whoever manages next season.
The Yankee coaches' contracts expire on Wednesday. Along with Pena, the
organization hopes to retain hitting coach Kevin Long. Third-base coach Larry
Bowa has an offer from Seattle but delayed a decision in hopes of returning
to the Yankees.
Pitching coach Ron Guidry is likely to be replaced. The same is probably true
of bullpen coach Joe Kerrigan.
