News goes inside power play between Yanks and A-Rod
News goes inside power play between Yanks and A-Rod
BY WAYNE COFFEY and T.J. QUINN
On the cul-de-sac at the end of a Southern California canyon road, Scott
Boras has a home the size of a small resort, complete with Pacific view.
There is a guest house there, where Alex and Cynthia Rodriguez annually come
to decompress after the season. When they arrive within the next week or so,
Alex will go to school.
"We're going to spend a week together. He has to go through a mountain of
stuff; we'll go through it together," Boras says.
The mountain of stuff includes the information Boras' 40-person negotiation
staff has compiled, data that goes way beyond what you'll find on the back of
his baseball card. Before Rodriguez decides whether to remain under contract
with the New York Yankees or forgo the final three years of his deal for free
agency - the deadline to decide is 10 days after the World Series ends -
Boras will sell Rodriguez on himself. Boras will show the best player in
baseball how, if you had looked at the careers of Willie Mays, Barry Bonds,
Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, etc., etc., when they were 32, none of them
could have looked forward to the numbers that await A-Rod. Consequently, none
of them was ever paid anything close to the numbers that await A-Rod.
"Then," Boras says. "He'll let me know."
Boras describes this process as informing a client about what his true value
is so he can make an informed decision. A lot of other people in baseball
call it "brainwashing."
"Boras is the ultimate Svengali," a veteran baseball insider says. "Alex will
come to a conclusion and express a conviction, and if it's counter to Boras'
thoughts or Boras' best interests, in a nanosecond he can make Alex change
his mind.
"It's a very unorthodox relationship."
Ever since Boras brought a 26-year-old Chicago Cub named Greg Maddux to
Atlanta as a free agent in 1992, he has been called the "most hated" and the
"most dangerous" and sometimes even "the most powerful" man in baseball, the
man who will sacrifice the truth and his own clients' best interests in order
to get record contracts. He has been called hypnotic and manipulative, able
to maneuver owners into signing deals they had no business signing.
Boras seems determined to get his player to free agency. Yankees general
manager Brian Cashman has vowed that he will seek a contract extension with
Rodriguez, but if the player opts out, negating his deal and the $30 million
subsidy the Yankees would get from the Texas Rangers over the next three
years, the negotiations are over.
If both follow their telegraphed paths, A-Rod has played his last game as a
Yankee. The question is whether either side is willing to destroy what seems
to be a match made in Cooperstown: the best player in the game chasing the
best records wearing the most famous uniform on the biggest stage.
"Everything I've heard from the Yankees suggests that they're prepared to
stick with what they've said," one top major league executive says. "If they
do, I think (Boras) has the potential for really messing this guy up. I think
if you go out there and go team by team and he messes with the Yankees and
ends up screwing up the potential for a deal there, you tell me who's going
to pay this guy? Who's looking at six years at $30 million? Ten at 30? And
the beauty is our boy A-Rod will follow him right down that path."
When asked about the Yankees' determination to end negotiations if A-Rod opts
out, Boras talks about how the Cubs said the same thing about Maddux in 1992,
only to frantically and unsuccessfully offer him money just before he signed
with the Braves.
As always, Boras is ready for the attacks. Never losing the chuckle from his
voice, Boras dismisses the anonymous "Svengali" shot the way he has for
years: his clients always make up their own minds, he says, just as Rodriguez
did as a kid when he signed a below-market value contract with Seattle rather
than go to arbitration.
"When Greg Maddux went to Atlanta, he did not take the largest deal. Charles
Johnson did not take the largest deal. Kevin Brown did not take the largest
deal. Bernie Williams did not take the largest deal when he stayed in New
York," he says. "We pride ourselves with our clients making informed
decisions. That is our job."
Boras is preparing a pitch that he believes will convince Rodriguez's next
contractual partner that the team will benefit from increased attendance
simply because A-Rod is the best player in the game. Its attendance will
further benefit from his production and the increased number of wins. It also
will benefit when he chases some of baseball's all-time records in the coming
years (he has said that A-Rod will play until he's in his mid-40s and could
hit 1,000 home runs). And a team with a regional sports network (such as YES,
for example), the little engines that have driven baseball's revenues past $6
billion, would have the "iconic player" it needs to sell gobs of advertising.
重伸那套I.P.N.理論
The Yankees are well aware of what A-Rod will bring them, Boras says. He
notes that since Rodriguez was traded to New York, annual attendance has
increased every year, from 3.47 million the year before to 4.27 million this
season.
"Is it all A-Rod? I wouldn't say all of it, but I think he's certainly a
factor in the raising of the attendance," he says.
It's the Yankees' turn to chuckle now. One executive says of course the
Bombers want A-Rod, "But we don't need him." When they enter their new
stadium in 2009, no one player will fill the seats the way Babe Ruth did in
1923, "a winning team will."
Whether the Yankees will truly turn their backs on A-Rod at any price if he
opts out or not, officials from other clubs say there is only one strategy to
deal with him, as theoretically should be the case with any negotiation: know
what a player is worth to you, set your limits, and be willing to walk away
if you don't get what you want.
"It's as simple as that," one American League executive says. "If you're
running your organization right, you can never be in a position where you
have to have something at all costs. Because if you're in that position with
Scott Boras, he'll crush you."
But GMs who have dealt with Boras say they understand how it happened.
If the Yankees don't extend or re-sign Rodriguez, expected suitors include
the Angels and the Cubs, with the Red Sox, Mariners, Dodgers, Giants and Mets
as less-likely possibilities. But Boras says any team can afford Rodriguez's
salary. The landscape has changed since 2001, when only a few teams could
have paid A-Rod $252 million.
"Now every team in baseball would take (the deal) because A-Rod pays for
himself," Boras says.
Part of Boras' sales pitch with all of his clients is the promise of
longevity. He famously provides players with workout and nutritional
regimens, and repeats the mantra that Rodriguez, for example, "has the body
of a 25-year-old," and that any of his clients will exceed normal projections
for a player's career.
But after two Boras clients, St. Louis' Rick Ankiel and the Mets' Scott
Schoeneweis, showed up on the client list of Signature Pharmacy as having
received human growth hormone, and, in Schoeneweis' case, steroids, several
executives say they will look twice at a Boras client, no matter who it is.
"When you represent Alex Rodriguez and you're talking to him when he's 16
years old and you're looking at the future and you're thinking he will be
getting record contracts his whole career. Why? Because he's deserving of
them," Boras says. "And it's not because of money. When they perform to the
level where they produce, you want to make sure they're fairly - and I want
to emphasize 'fairly' - evaluating their value and fairness for both sides.
"The question an owner will ask is, 'Is this good for the team?' That will be
the sole process by which a decision will be made."
"It has little to do with Scott Boras."
