YES!This is how I've come up with my original proposal ...
I read a book called "The Emperor of Scents"
L. Turin is the scientist who is trying to come up with a vibrational theory
to explain the olfactory mechanism via "inelastic electron tunneling"
Vib theory's not a brand new idea , and was proposed in the 60'
but vib theory has its problems,
for example, it can not explain why enantiomers smell differently
The olfactory sensory system is far more complicated than we expect
我唸了Turin的paper, 也唸了其他做嗅覺的相關papers
(越唸發現越複雜 我想 這不是一個單一的vib可以解釋的)
整個嗅覺的機制甚至牽涉到人的記憶 經驗 那是屬於大腦神經科學和心理學的部分
不過 身為physical chemist 至少我提的這個不負責任proposal
是想要研究一下enantiomers and isotopic compounds對同一個嗅覺受器蛋白
是否有不同的binding kinetics...
話說回來 光學異構物有不同的味道這是比較容易切入的部分
至少有太多這樣的例子 對於他們的味道也有很清楚的描述
至於在尋找同位素的時候就有些困難度 ....
所以除了自己做了小試驗以外 剛好就想說問問各位有沒有這樣的經驗
或是手上有沒有benzaldehyde-d6可以聞一下
當然啦 這其實不是很"安全"的行為....所以....
當然考完試以後這個proposal就可以不管了
不過是純粹好奇 不知道以後會不會有人研究出來...
