甲: Our greatest president, Abraham Lincoln said in 1865 that slavery was
somehow, the cause of the war. In the north, industry was prosperous.
Since the weather was warmer and the soil was more fertile in the south,
agriculture was the main economic activity. The southern people "bought"
the blacks to work for them. Because it needs more labor to grow cotton.
They treated them as goods instead of "people." They tortured the slaves.
Even the most basic rights of being a man were deprived. The terrible
darkness devoured them. But northern Americans used machine in their
factories, and they regarded that all human beings were created equal.
So they decided to defend their belivies.
B: Doctor乙, Can you give us other reasons of the war?
乙: For half of a century or so after 1865, most historians regarded slavery
as the main cause of the war. But many historians then and since disagreed
strongly with this view. They think the southern states had gone to war not
to protect slavery but to disclaim each state should have independence.
The south think no one can withdraw sovereign communities which they
originally had. Some said that the existence of slavery was only an
incident. On the other hand, the north wanted union, a country, a
government that had the right to rule whole America.
A: Any other causes, professor丙?
丙: There is one more reason. As we know, the main economic support in the
south was farming. On the contrary, it is industrialising capitalism in
the north. So the clashes between two differnet economic insterest gruops
and classes began. The south fought not only for the principle of state
rights adn self-government but also for the land, the age of chivalry, and
the nobility of aristocrats.
B: Now we know the causes of the war very well. Thank you for being interviewed
and giving so many details of Civil War.
