Mike Mussina hadn't pitched in a game in three weeks, and for
the season you can argue that he hasn't pitched as well as
Aaron Small, Shawn Chacon or Chien-Ming Wang. Yet Mel
Stottlemyre and Joe Torre made a point of scheduling Mussina's
return for last night, so that he would be lined up to pitch
the final game of the season in Fenway Park.
That game, of course, could decide everything for the Yankees.
And so, you have to ask: Is this a good idea?
It looked good last night as Mussina made an encouraging return
to the mound, pitching six innings and allowing one run in the
Yankees' 7-6 win over the Orioles. In fact, Mussina was good
enough that Torre instantly made another decision, choosing
Wang to stay in the rotation over Small.
In the end, that decision may be even more pivotal because,
Torre said, the rotation for the final series with the Red Sox
is now cemented: Wang on Friday night, Randy Johnson on
Saturday and Mussina on Sunday.
"I feel good about it," Torre said.
The manager made it clear that he and Stottlemyre agonized over
the decision between Wang and Small. After all, how do you take
a guy who is 9-0, and seemingly on a magic carpet ride, out of
the rotation? For a second time?
Not long ago Torre said he couldn't imagine taking Small out of
the rotation again. Remember, Small was pulled in favor of Al
Leiter to make room for Jaret Wright back in August. But the
journeyman has struggled some in his last two starts, while
Wang was dominant for eight innings on Tuesday against the
Orioles.
Basically, Wang was too good for Torre and Stottlemyre to
ignore, knowing that any game over these next 10 days could
wind up being crucial in this sprint to the finish with the Red
Sox.
"We're just trying to ride the hot hand," Torre said. "We had
to make a decision."
There was some thought on the Yankees' part that Wang would be
a better fit in the bullpen, that his hard sinker might be a
nice weapon to have in the sixth or seventh innings - that he
might be just the guy to take some of the load off Tom Gordon
and Mariano Rivera.
It's an issue that left Torre exasperated for the third time in
a week, as the bullpen turned a 7-1 laugher into a heart-
stopper. Just as it turned a blowout in Toronto last Friday
into an 11-10 affair, and another against the Orioles on
Tuesday into a 12-9 win, the bullpen necessitated the use of a
closer.
On this night Rivera wasn't available because he'd worked the
past three nights and six of the last eight. And while Gordon
earned the save, he gave up a solo home run to Melvin Mora to
make the crowd hold its breath for the final out.
"This was probably the most shocked I've been," Torre said of
the bullpen meltdown.
This time Torre thought he'd found an answer, perhaps an
important piece to the bullpen puzzle, when Leiter worked a 1-2-
3 seventh inning in relief of Mussina. Then Leiter blew up in
the eighth, and Torre was forced to use Gordon at a time when
he is desperately trying to keep his late-inning twosome fresh
for this last week - and October.
So now maybe Small can help in that regard.
Is it a good move? It all depends on Wang and Mussina. Though
Mussina looked sharp last night, using his changeup and curve
nicely to keep the Orioles off balance, it's a lot to ask him
to pitch a winner-take-all finale with just one more start
before next weekend.
Meanwhile, Small, Chacon and Wang all have proven they can
handle pennant-race pressure, and it's their pitching, together
with Randy Johnson, that has dramatically changed the feel of
this race with the Red Sox over the last couple of weeks.
Still, Torre made it clear yesterday he believes the Yankees
need Mussina at the top of their rotation if they're going to
have a chance to win in October - if they get there.
"It's nice to sort of ignore Mike Mussina because we've been
doing well," Torre said. "But he's hugely important to us. This
is why we need to find out where he is and how much we can
count on him."
Torre believes strongly in Mussina as a big-game pitcher, going
back to Mussina's first season as a Yankee, when he outdueled
Barry Zito in the 2001 playoffs with his team down 0-2 and
facing elimination against the A's.
Whether Mussina can still dominate in the postseason remains to
be seen, but for the moment his return last night may just put
the Yankees' pitching picture in the best shape it has been all
season. Right now, in fact, it looks like it's pitching that
just might separate them from the Red Sox over this final week.
But if it comes down to next weekend at Fenway, well, Torre has
made his choices. Is Mussina ready for a winner-take-all
finale? You still have to wonder.
