Abstract: In this talk, I discuss the issue of alienability in possessive relations between nouns. I present evidence from Mandarin and Southern Min showing that the alienability of nouns, though not morphologically marked, affects syntactic alternations as well as on-line sentence processing. Inalienable nouns, like verbs, subcategorize for nominal arguments. With crosslinguistic, syntactic, and processing data considered, we conclude that (in)alienability, in terms of possessive relations, should be
represented in nouns in the UG.
