Recent photographs show him hanging with reigning NBA MVP Kevin Durant and at the wedding of Toronto Raptors basketballer Landry Fields. Scroll a little further and you can see the 36-year-old playing hoops with Carmelo Anthony and Justin Bieber or chilling with Tyson Chandler in New York. Lentz’s appearance doesn’t reveal any hints of his profession or how he has become one of the most connected men in the NBA. Heavily tattooed with trimmed facial hair and trendy clothes, you could mistake him for a stylist or perhaps a personal trainer. So who is Lentz and how did he get here? It can all be traced back to a trip the former college basketballer from Virginia Beach took to Sydney, Australia, in the early 2000s. Lentz had studied religion in college, but had struggled to connect with the traditional-style teachings of the Bible. It wasn’t until he attended Sydney’s Hillsong Church that he found his calling. “I could be me. People weren’t, like, ‘I have to do this.’ It was, like, ‘I get to do this, I want to do this.’ I just didn’t know church could be like that. Australia was an eye-opener for me,” Lentz told The Bleacher Report. The other life-changing moment Lentz had Down Under was meeting his Australian wife, Laura. Together the two decided to establish Hillsong’s first US location in New York City where they now serve as co-pastors. The church has grown so quickly it now hosts services for crowds of 8000 people, prompting The Esquire Register to name Lentz one of “37 People Under 35 Who Are Reshaping The World”. But it’s Lentz’s ability to connect with the stars which has seen him gain mainstream media attention. Labelled Justin Bieber’s hipster pastor by the New York Post, Lentz has enjoyed a close friendship with the pop megastar since first meeting him in 2008. He’s also become one of the most recommended spiritual advisers in the NBA — a situation Lentz believes stems from his ability to relate to athletes. “I speak the same language as them. It’s a huge advantage for me,” Lentz said. A recent Bleacher Report article featured a number of positive references from players like Durant, Fields and Kyle Korver. “He’s definitely relatable,” Durant said. “He came to me as a friend first, and I can say that he genuinely cares.” Fields said: “When I first met him, I was like, ‘You’re a pastor?’ It was brand new, shocking, but his appearance helps ... It’s an easier transition than just meeting up with some old white guy behind a pulpit.” Korver added: “He’s just been a super positive confirming voice for me. Some days you’re feeling a little low or a little down, and he picks your energy back up to a nine or a 10. He just fills up your spirit, man; it’s super attractive.” Lentz, who became friends with several rugby players in Australia, believes athletes often struggle to find people they can confide in. “What you find with people who are really famous is that often they’re isolated,” Lentz said. “They have so much money that they can’t trust anybody, or anybody that tries to help them always has a hook trying to get something from them.
