Last July, when Warriors head coach Steve Kerr hired Mike Brown as his lead
assistant, some inside the NBA were perplexed.
The biggest question: why Kerr would replace the offensive-minded Luke Walton
with Brown, a defensive guru, when Golden State already had Ron Adams —
perhaps the NBA’s top defensive assistant — on staff. But after watching
LeBron James engineer the biggest Finals comeback in NBA history at the
Warriors’ expense, Kerr was subscribing to the philosophy that a team can
never have too much defense.
It was an astute call in hindsight. Ten years after Brown shepherded a
James-led Cavaliers team to the 2007 NBA Finals, he is overseeing a strategy
to contain the future Hall of Famer while the ailing Kerr is on an indefinite
hiatus from the bench.
Brown, who coached James in Cleveland for five seasons (2005-10), knows as
well as anyone that the Cavaliers depend on the 13-time All-Star’s ability
to attack the rim. That is why Golden State’s blueprint Thursday night for
Game 1 of the NBA Finals called for Kevin Durant — one of the league’s best
interior defenders — to blanket James around the basket.
Forced to contend with Durant’s 7-foot-5 wingspan, James committed five of
his game-high eight turnovers while knifing toward the rim. A player who has
built much of his distinguished career on overwhelming opponents in the paint
went 2-for-8 on his drives. Asked after the game what stood out to him about
the Warriors’ approach, James responded succinctly: “K.D.”
Because Golden State didn’t send a wave of double-teams at James, it could
throw the rest of Cleveland’s offense out of sync with a switch-heavy
scheme. The Cavaliers’ Tristan Thompson, Deron Williams and Kyle Korver
totaled zero points on a combined 0-for-8 shooting. After hitting a
three-pointer less than two minutes into the game, J.R. Smith was scoreless.
Cleveland’s 34.9 percent clip from the field was its second-worst this
season behind its 34.1 percent dud in a Jan. 11 loss at Portland. For the
first time these playoffs, the Cavaliers failed to score 100 points. They had
more turnovers (20) than assists (15).
After breezing through the first three rounds with the best postseason
offensive rating in 40 years (120.7 points per 100 possessions), Cleveland
posted an offensive rating Thursday of 89.2. Philadelphia’s 100.7 points per
100 possessions in the regular season were a league-worst.
Though Durant guarded James for the bulk of the game, Andre Iguodala and
Draymond Green were solid in their stints on him. The center rotation of Zaza
Pachulia, David West and JaVale McGee helped hold the Cavaliers to 30 points
in the paint.
Zaza, West, McGee
Klay Thompson, whose shooting slump extended with a 3-for-16 showing from the
field, reinforced why he is one of the NBA’s elite perimeter defenders. He
guarded four different players, limiting them to a combined 1-for-12
shooting. Kyrie Irving, whose exploits against Golden State have been
well-chronicled, shot just 1-for-6 from the field when matched up against
Thompson.
“The best thing about tonight, obviously, was just our defensive presence
and effort for 48 minutes,” Warriors point guard Stephen Curry said. “They
have two of the best scorers in the league, so you got to just keep pressing,
sticking to the game plan.”
One of the league’s most affable coaches, Brown has avoided any temptation
to bemoan his two firings by Cleveland. In 2010, when Brown was first
dismissed by the Cavaliers, reports suggested that James played a role in the
front office’s decision.
In his 2011 autobiography, “Shaq Uncut,” Shaquille O’Neal — the Cavaliers
’ starting center much of that final 2009-10 season — wrote that James
never listened to Brown. Two months after Brown was fired by Cleveland in
2014 after one season, he followed the media coverage from his Westlake,
Ohio, mansion when James announced in a first-person essay in Sports
Illustrated that he was returning to the Cavaliers from the Miami Heat.
Last June, between Games 3 and 4 of the NBA Finals, Brown interviewed with
Kerr in the lobby of a hotel in downtown Cleveland. Less than a year later,
Brown is intent on making sure James — the 2016 Finals MVP for averaging
29.7 points, 11.3 rebounds, 8.9 assists, 2.3 blocks and 2.6 steals per game
— doesn’t orchestrate another series upset.
“LeBron is obviously a very good three-point shooter, so we wanted K.D. to
make him try to drive at times,” Brown said Thursday, detailing his game
plan for slowing his former player. “We wanted (Durant) to try to use his
length at the rim and see if (James) can score over the top of him.”
Kerr?
