“It is always a treasure to look at a well-managed team, to see how they do
at the gate, as a matter of business and on the court. I think San Antonio,
everyone can agree, is a model of how a team, you would hope if you owned it,
would be run. They’ve been competitive for a long time.
“As their competition would say, it sure helps to have Tim Duncan. But when
you look at what they surrounded him with, and the way they’ve gone into the
international market, they’re really very excellent at what they do. And
they bring people into a building that’s relatively new but continually
updated. That makes me very happy, as does Oklahoma City, as does watching
what Portland is doing this year.
“I kind of enjoy it. I’m not allowed to say that until February 1. If Pop
wants to have some fun…it’s a big act. Come on. He’s having fun, he’s
making statements. People are waiting to see what he says or doesn’t say.
But by and large, I must tell you, we’re in the huddles, we’re bringing our
fans close up. Frankly I have my own view about grabbing a coach in the
middle of the game. I know our network partners love it. I’m sort of more
interested in what’s going on in the middle of the huddle.”
