Ever since the Knicks elevated Mike Woodson to head coach after the March 2012
dismissal of Mike D’Antoni, Woodson has preached defense, toughness and
rebounding. These are terms that resonate with Knicks fans, who cherished the
gritty success of the teams led by Pat Riley and Jeff Van Gundy. After a 110-90
home loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday, Woodson and the Knicks returned to
the theme of defensive identity.
自從解僱冷笑話之後，尼克評估武僧可以勝任總教練的原因是他可以帶來堅強的防守。這些

The Hawks’ 56 percent field-goal shooting provided ample reason to fret. But
the real problem may be at the other end of the floor, where a significant drop
in scoring efficiency has put even more strain on a flimsy defense.

Heading into Saturday, the Knicks were allowing opponents to score at nearly
the same rate they did over all last season. Because 54 victories and countless
Tyson Chandler snarls are hard to ignore, there was a perception that the
2012-13 Knicks were at least adequate on defense. The truth is, they were
simply exceptional on offense: They did not wrestle opponents into submission
so much as they blew them out of the water.
直到星期六，尼克終於可以將對手的得分壓制在跟去年差不多程度。去年尼克至少還算是有

Last season’s Knicks accomplished something spectacular when they set an
N.B.A. record for 3-pointers made and attempted, yet played fewer possessions
each game than any other team. The statistics reflected the Knicks’ dedication
to working through the shot clock, systematically dismantling the defense in
search of an open 3-pointer or a clear drive to the rim.
去年尼克讓人印象深刻的地方是，就算每場比賽回合數比任何一對都要少，他們仍然破NBA
記錄的三分球命中數跟出手數。這個統計反映出尼克很認真的在消耗掉每次24秒進攻時間，
有系統的拆解對方的防守，並且找到三分空擋，或是進攻籃框的機會。
This season, the Knicks’ 3-pointers and free throws attempted, key indicators
of offensive effectiveness, are down significantly. The decline is a reflection
of how much harder they have had to work for their points.
The back-line defense of Andrea Bargnani, a newcomer, has been thoroughly
scrutinized, but less has been made of Raymond Felton’s disappearance. Felton
struggled with injury at the start of the season, and his jump shot has yet to
recover. Perhaps more important, he has not been able to consistently initiate
the Knicks’ drive-and-kick offense.
反觀今年球季，尼克的三分還有罰球的出手數(這兩個數字代表的是重要的進攻效率指標)都
大幅度地下降。這個下降反映出尼克在進攻是有多痛苦多掙扎。初來乍到的Bargnani要負責
防守上的最後防線，已經被各方鞭了不知道幾百下。但是大家都沒有注意到肥頓在防守上根
本沒有幫忙到任何事情。肥頓今年開季就因傷病困擾，同時他的跳投準星依舊還沒有找回來
，但更關鍵的也許是這小胖子根本不想要打切傳。
Whether Felton’s ineffective play is the cause or the result of the Knicks’
lack of spacing and ball movement is unclear. But the impact is obvious: More
and more of the Knicks’ possessions are running through Carmelo Anthony in the
post.
先不管肥頓的爛進攻是不是尼克無法有效製造外線空擋或傳導的原因，還是個馬後砲，但是
這件事情的影響非常明顯，只會讓尼克的進攻都只有一千零一招：Melo低對單打。
“Right now, we’re not in much of a rhythm,” Iman Shumpert said of the
offense. “And I think the worse it gets, the more we’re trying to put on the
shoulders of our scorer.”

Anthony, rather than finding his offense on catch-and-shoot 3-pointers and cuts
to the basket, is being forced to create his opportunities from scratch. Even
for a scorer with Anthony’s gifts, it is a grueling, inefficient way to earn
points. Anthony has labored to carry the offense, but he cannot be expected to
score 40 points every night.
Melo被逼迫要去打爛仗，而不是嘗試去做他習慣的三分catch-and-shoot跟直接進攻籃筐。
就算Melo是個天生得分好手，這種沒效率的爛帳進攻也是會讓人受不了的啊。Melo已經

The Knicks conceded that their difficulty scoring had affected their defensive
intensity.
“I think we’re dependent on our offense,” Woodson said, “trying to find
offense and not really thinking the defensive end.”
After the Knicks miss a shot, Shumpert said, “the air goes out of the building
because we missed that shot.”
He added, “We got to get back and get that stop and get revved up again.”
尼克教練團承認他們進攻上的失敗已經連帶影響到防守強度了。“我想我們真的是很依賴進

Whether the Knicks can regain their offensive flow is a question that perhaps
only Felton can answer. Pablo Prigioni is the Knicks’ best facilitator of ball
movement, but Woodson continues to limit his minutes, and Beno Udrih, a backup
point guard, has fallen out of the rotation.
尼克可不可以重新找回進攻節奏的唯一解也許也只有肥頓可以回答。當Prigioni在的時候，
尼克進攻時球的傳導是最好的，但是武僧一直限制Prigioni的時間，而且Udrih這個替補控
衛甚至還不在rotation上。
It is also possible that the Knicks are missing the injured Chandler at center
just as much on offense as on defense. He is their best screener, and he has
developed chemistry with Felton and Anthony on pick-and-rolls.
另外拳王的傷在尼克進攻上的影響也許跟防守上的一樣。拳王是最好的單擋武器，而且在肥
頓和Melo的擋切上，拳王提供很好的化學效應。
Chandler’s absence has forced Bargnani to the center position and returned
Anthony to power forward. Against Atlanta, the Knicks’ best offensive
sequences came when those two spread the floor and created some 3-point chances
for Bargnani.
拳王的缺陣迫使Bargnani要站到5號位而且Melo也要回到PF。打老鷹的那場，尼克最好的進
攻結果都是肥頓跟Melo拉開替Bargnani製造三分出手機會。
Bargnani will need to capitalize on those shots because he is the Switzerland
of pick-and-roll defense. His policy of noninvolvement is well known throughout
the N.B.A., and Hawks point guard Jeff Teague mercilessly targeted him
Saturday. Bargnani seemed to actively avoid providing any support when his man
set a screen, a tactic that led to layups and fouls. This season, Teague has
attempted 24 free throws in seven quarters against the Knicks (he sat out the
fourth quarter Saturday).
Bargnani需要確實的投進這些三分的原因是要彌補當面對對方的擋切時，他根本就是不會參
與防守的損失。尼克限制Bargnani在防守上投入的體力是全NBA都知道的事情，所以JT毫無
保留地狂打尼克這個痛點。Bargnani在面對擋人進攻的時候，看起來好像不會主動提供隊友
幫忙，所以導致對手可以輕鬆的上籃或是製造犯規。這一季，JT在面對尼克的七節裡面得到
的24個罰球機會(星期六這場比賽神武JT第四節還都沒上喔!!)。
While Teague is having a career season, there is no shortage of aggressive
point guards who run dozens of pick-and-rolls each game. The Knicks can improve
marginally in those situations, but if they are going to be successful this
season, it will not begin with stops, despite the defense-first refrain from
the locker room.
Last season’s Knicks could hang around and count on an eventual shower of
3-pointers to pull away from an opponent. Hawks guard Kyle Korver said before
Saturday’s game, “I still feel like we’re playing a very similar team,” but
through nine games, the Knicks have yet to show such explosiveness.
當JT正準備要打出生涯年時，讓他這麼一個善於打擋切的控球後衛執行戰術是一個完全正
確的事情。就算以防守為主體的尼克在面對JT的擋切也只能儘量想辦法做出進步，但是今
年如果要是個成功的球季，這種事情不能一直再發生。去年尼克可以每一場都在下三分雨把
對手射爽爽。Korver在星期六的比賽前說，”我仍然感覺我們正打一隻跟我們非常相像的
球隊“，但是九場比賽過去了，尼克還沒有展現出跟老鷹一樣的得分爆發力。
There is a sense that, like a phrase on the tip of your tongue you just cannot
remember, these Knicks are a possession away from regaining the rhythm and
confidence that inspired deafening cheers at Madison Square Garden last season.
After the Knicks were booed again Saturday, talk in the locker room focused on
effort and trust. But when it comes to more tangible solutions, the Knicks are
a team at a loss for words.
就像你好像記得什麼事情，可是卻臨時想不起來一樣，這些Knicks離重新讓麥迪遜花園廣
場想起震耳欲聾的歡呼聲還有好長一段路要走。尼克在被boo之後，隊員們間必須要互相信
任並且主動做好自己的事情。但是當要解決這些明顯的問題時，尼克整隊卻又都不知道怎
麼辦。
