Former NBA referee and admitted felon Tim Donaghy intruded on the NBA Finals
with a wide range of allegations designed to lessen his upcoming sentence.
A first-round series between the Mavericks and Houston Rockets in 2005
figured prominently in the document.
Lawyers for Donaghy filed a letter with a Brooklyn court this week. In that
letter, Donaghy outlined examples of what he believed to be directives from
the league office meant to manipulate the outcome of games and to protect the
league's star players. Details of the document became public just hours
before Game 3 of the Finals between the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers.
The Mavericks made their way into the letter. The team isn't mentioned by
name. But the Mavericks ("Team 3") and owner Mark Cuban along with the
Rockets ("Team 4") and Yao Ming are the subjects.
"Team 3 lost the first two games in the series and Team 3's owner complained
to NBA officials," the letter stated. "Team 3's owner alleged that referees
were letting a Team 4 player get away with illegal screens. NBA Executive Y
told Referee Supervisor Z that the referees for that game were to enforce the
screening rules strictly against that Team 4 player. Referee Supervisor Z
informed the referees about his instructions. As an alternate referee for
that game, Tim also received these instructions."
Cuban responded by e-mail Tuesday evening.
"Hell yes I complained," he said. "Go look at the tapes. He [Yao] was setting
illegal screens every time they ran a high pick-and-roll. So we sent them in,
and they started calling the play by the books."
Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy was fined $100,000 during that series for
publicly saying that a referee told him league officials had targeted Yao.
Van Gundy, now an analyst for ESPN and ABC, said at halftime of Tuesday
night's game that he didn't "want to give any credibility to what Tim Donaghy
said" but that he does believe the league office should be more transparent
when complaints are filed.
Donaghy also alleged that referees altered the outcome of a series between
the Lakers and Sacramento in 2002 to help the Lakers come back from a 3-2
deficit to force a Game 7 and win the series.
NBA commissioner David Stern told reporters before Game 3 that Donaghy's
allegations were baseless. Richard Buchanan, the NBA Executive Vice President
and General Counsel, issued this statement:
"According to Mr. Donaghy, all of his allegations have previously been made
to the FBI and the U.S. Attorney, and they are clearly being disclosed now as
part of his desperate attempt to lighten the sentence that will be imposed
for his criminal conduct. The NBA remains vigilant in protecting the
integrity of our game and has fully cooperated with the government at every
stage of its investigation. The only criminal activity uncovered is Mr.
Donaghy's."
Donaghy has pleaded guilty to felony charges that he took cash from gamblers
and bet on NBA games while he was a referee. He is scheduled to be sentenced
on July 14 and faces up to 33 months in prison.
