continuous => lim[x->1-]f(x) = lim[x->1+]f(x) = f(1)
=> a*1^2+1=3=b+1 => a=2, b=2
(2)
differentiable => continuous AND
lim[x->1-]f'(x) = lim[x->1+]f'(x) =f'(1)
=> 2*a*1=1 => a=1/2 but not continuous
=> conflict => NOT differentiable at x=1
