McClendon, 54, has been with the Detroit Tigers since 2006, serving as their hitting coach starting in 2007. He managed the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2001-05 and previously interviewed for the Mariners job in 2010. The Puget Sound Business Journal earlier reported the news. McClendon replaces Eric Wedge, who walked away from the team due to a difference of opinion with the Mariners front office. Wedge had a 212-272 record as Mariners manager.
