ARLINGTON -- The Rangers have acquired pitcher Cliff Lee from the Mariners on
Friday for first baseman Justin Smoak, pitcher Blake Beavan, Double-A Frisco
reliever Josh Lueke and second baseman/outfielder Matt Lawson.

Lee could start for the Rangers as early as Saturday against the Orioles. He
was scheduled to pitch on Friday against the Yankees at Safeco Field.

The Yankees and the Mariners were close to a deal this morning that would
have sent Lee to New York for Minor League catcher Jesus Montero, infielder
David Adams and a third prospect, but the trade fell through. That allowed
the Rangers to move aggressively with Lee.
