Mangala is a powerful, solid and fast defender who commands the rest of his back four. He would be another John Terry for Chelsea or a Jaap Stam for Man United. There is a reason that he’s carrying such a huge price tag, and it is his ability to run a defence by himself. Playing in the centre, Mangala dominates strikers but can also score from set-pieces, proving so by scoring three goals in six Europa League appearances last season. His strengths are evident: he’s strong in the air having won 11/22 headed duels in the Champions League and 19/24 in the Europa. He also won 70% of his tackles in Europe’s elite competition, showing that he allies his aerial ability with a good ground game. He is also good with the ball at his feet. He completed 87% of his passes in the Champions League, achieving a high of 94% against Atletico as the finalists beat the Portuguese side.
