The Annexe Gallery presents TOMBOYS & ANGELS, a fashion show that celebrates
gender diversity and outrageous individual expressions of style.
The show featured clothes, accessories and works of art from over forty Art
For Grabs arts & crafts stalls, with styling and make up by a team of some
of KL's most vibrant emerging style-meisters led by Jun Kit and Ooi Ying Nee.
The catwalk is an installation that mixes politics and irreverence designed
by Lainie Yeoh.
Although pitched as 'nothing to do with the fatwa', the show does come soon
after the religious edict by the National Fatwa Council against 'tomboyism'
and cross-dressing.
It was also the first show of its kind ever held in the country and seemed
to reflect the growing dissatisfaction of people against what they see to
be increasing incursions by the religious authorities into their lives.
Following the fatwa against 'tomboyism' the Council issued another one
banning Muslims from practicing yoga.
