Hanson was a former Redlands East Valley High School and Riverside City College standout who pitched four seasons for the Atlanta Braves and one with the Angels. He was found unresponsive in a friend's Atlanta-area home on Nov. 8 and died the following night in an area hospital from "catastrophic organ failure." He was 29 years old. His death was ruled accidental by a local coroner. Hanson was a one-time top prospect whose career was derailed by injuries. He was ranked the No. 4 prospect in baseball before the 2009 season and initially flourished. He finished third in National League Rookie of the Year voting after going 11-4 with a 2.89 ERA in 2009 and became a staple of the Braves rotation in the following years, earning an Opening Day start in 2012. He was traded to the Angels in exchange for All-Star closer Jordan Walden before the 2013 season, and began to fall on hard times. His stepbrother Aaron died during the season, and Hanson left the Angels for bereavement leave on two separate occasions, first in May and then again in June. Hanson also suffered from various shoulder injuries that cost him even more time and took a toll on his effectiveness. His stepbrother's death and his arm injuries resulted in him pitching in a career-low 15 games for the Angels that season, in which he went 4-3 with a career-worst 5.42 ERA. He would never pitch in the majors again. The Angels let Hanson go in free agency after the season, and he signed with but was eventually let go by the Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox and San Francisco Giants organizations, all in just over a year and a half.
