Tommy John took 18 months to return from that first surgery. Few realize that John had a major setback during his rehab, an inflamed ulnar nerve, that required a second surgery. Many surgeons now move that nerve as a routine part of the surgery. Others leave it in place, knowing it's easily fixable and that the problem only occurs in a minority of cases.
