Clashes between security forces and suspected Islamist militants became more frequent in 2005 and are linked to regional developments. Jund al-Sham, a formerly little-known militant group assumed gradual prominence in 2005, and is accused by the Syrian authorities of being behind the latest string of attacks and disturbances. Syrian Kurds have also become more restless, emboldened by political gains made by Kurds in post-Saddam Hussein Iraq. Foreign business interests have not been targets of attacks.
