They are interchangeable when both used to refer to something that happens
at the same time or during the time that something is happening.
+ while/when : both are OK =>
Dad came back when/while I was watching TV.
Her parents died when/while she was still at school.
事件發生是長時間的, 用 while 較好 =>
While mom was cooking, I was watching TV.
用在年齡或在講生命的某階段時, 用 when =>
When I was a child we lived in Tainan.
My father died when I was twelve.
事件發生是短暫的, 用 when =>
I just finished my dinner when he entered my room.
I was asleep when the earthquake shook our house.
用於比較時: while =>
He is very hardworking while his brother is very lazy
