SPAIN (4-1-4-1)
Reina – 7.5: Pulled off two double saves right at the end of the first half to
deny the South Koreans. Had little to do otherwise.
Sergio Ramos – 7: Wasn’t really put to the test in defence. The captain for
the evening spent most of the game in the opposition's half.
Albiol – 6.5: A mistake early in the second half almost handed South Korea the
opener. Other than that, he looked assured and frequently joined in his team’s
forays upfront. It was his pass that teed up Navas’ goal.
Marchena – 6: His lack of pace showed as the Korean forwards beat him in a
foot race on a number of counter-attacks. Showed his cynical, competitive side
with a reckless foul late in the game.
Capdevila – 6.5: Wasn’t too adventurous going forward. Traded a few lovely
one-two’s with his team-mates in attack. Rarely looked troubled at the back.
Javi Martinez – 7: A typical hard-working performance from the box-to-box
midfielder. He was always available to provide an extra hand in the attacking
half, but was also ever-present in his own when under siege.
Jesus Navas – 8.5: An absolute livewire down the right flank. Did not stop
bombarding forward and pelted the Korean box with crosses and cutbacks.
Deservedly capped off his evening with a stunning goal... his first for his
country.
Iniesta – 7: Without Xavi, the task of orchestrating the Spanish attack fell
to 'Don Andres'. He was heavily involved in almost every assault, although the
final ball was lacking.
Fabregas – 7: Played almost as a second striker as he lurked just behind
Llorente. Should have opened the scoring on the half-hour mark but his shot
struck the bar. Went about constantly teeing up openings for his team-mates.
Mata – 6.5: Great movement on and off the ball. Always found himself in open
spaces, but only sporadically ran at the Korean defenders.
Llorente – 6: Saw a lot of chances in the first half in the air and on the
ground. Pulled a couple of attempts wide.
Substitutes:
Victor Valdes – 6: His debut almost went horribly wrong when he came out to
claim a high ball and missed completely.
Pedro – 6.5: Always tracked back down the left flank to win possession back.
Very tricky to handle in the attacking half.
Xabi Alonso – 7: His long range passing hit the mark every time as he
instantly gave the team an extra dimension by spreading the play across the
attacking third.
Xavi – 6.5: Much like Xabi, his passing did not miss a beat, and there were a
couple of sumptuous through balls that deserved a better finish.
David Villa – 6: Had at least three glorious close-range chances, but it was
his near-miss that led to Navas’ winning goal.
David Silva – N/A
