Additional reporting by Jimmy Bramlett.
In addition to exits with fanfare, one of the Dodgers seemingly-firm records
was broken by a pitcher who hopes to be around next year. All-Star Hong-Chih
Kuo’s scoreless ninth inning dropped his ERA to 1.20, a single-season
franchise low for a minimum 50 innings pitched, unseating Eric Gagne.
“It feels good,” said Kuo. “I’m just happy to have the opportunity to
pitch regularly.”

Immediately after the final out, which fittingly was recorded by reliever
Hong-Chih Kuo -- more on that later -- Torre was presented with a large
painting of himself in a Dodgers uniform by sports artist Opie Otterstad, who
did a similar painting for retiring Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox.
Finally, Torre made a point of bringing in Kuo -- the situation actually
called for it, but Torre was planning to bring him in no matter what -- so
Kuo could post the lowest single-season ERA (minimum 50 innings) in franchise
history. Kuo pitched around a leadoff walk to retire the final three
Diamondbacks hitters, nailing down his 12th save and leaving him with an ERA
of 1.200, just edging the 1.202 posted by Eric Gagne in 2003, when Gagne went
55-for-55 in save opportunities and won the National League Cy Young Award.

Joe Torre was presented a 3-1 win over the D-backs in his last game, which
also provided a send-off to retiring catcher Brad Ausmus, an ERA record for
closer Hong-Chih Kuo, double-digit wins for starting pitcher Ted Lilly, Matt
Kemp homering in a fifth consecutive game and a .300 batting average for
shortstop Rafael Furcal.
After rookie reliever Kenley Jansen lowered his ERA to 0.67 (27 innings) with
a scoreless eighth, Kuo got his 12th save with a scoreless ninth, in the
process besting the all-time franchise ERA record of his "idol," Eric Gagne,
at 1.20, which also is lowest in the Major Leagues for a minimum of 50
innings.
"He's still my idol," Kuo said of Gagne after breaking his record.
