One irony in the trend of Dodgers injuries is that Hong-Chih Kuo is bucking
it.
Consider that a medical miracle.
儘管命運一再作弄人，郭泓志在經過一串的手術後仍能東山站起可說是一項醫學的奇蹟。
The 24-year-old left-handed reliever from Taiwan struck out four of the six
batters he faced in setting up Friday night's 5-3 Dodgers win over the
winless Phillies. Brett Tomko got the win in his Dodgers debut and understudy
closer Danys Baez saved the first game since Eric Gagne's most recent
surgical procedure.

Los Angeles scored five runs in the first three innings off Philadelphia
starter Gav in Floyd, then had only one hit over the last 6 1/3 innings.
Jason Repko, batting leadoff after Rafael Furcal's late scratch, went 2-for-4
with a run, walk, RBI and stolen base to raise his average to .438. Bill
Mueller had a pair of doubles and the Dodgers stranded 10 runners. James
Loney had an RBI triple, but also had a tight hamstring at game's end.
Kuo emerged unscatched, nothing to be taken for granted. He's a rookie by
baseball standards, but a veteran in elbow operations. He's had three, two of
them of the severe Tommy John reconstruction variety.
郭展現出沒有受傷之前的表現，這是理所當然的結果。他算是棒球界的菜鳥，但卻是動手

After a five-year rehab, his resiliency remains uncertain, especially in the
chilly weather expected on this trip through Pennsylvania, one reason the
Dodgers felt compelled to start the season with 12 pitchers. It's impossible,
Kuo concedes, not to think about the potential for another injury. But he
said Gagne, who underwent his third arm surgery Friday, gave him advice to
pitch by.
經過了長達五年的復健，他還能否站起來真的很難預料，特別是這趟賓州之行要碰到這種

It first happened to Kuo in his professional debut in San Bernardino on April
10, 2000, a game that has become something of Dodgers Minor League folklore.
Kuo faced 10 batters that night and struck out seven. He hit a batter with a
pitch and induced two weak grounders.

Joe Thurston, now in Philadelphia's farm system, was playing shortstop behind
Kuo that night.

"It seemed like he struck out everybody," said Thurston. "I remember having a
friend on the other team and he fouled a ball off. That was about the best
contact off him -- a foul ball. In Single-A, you just don't see guys throw
like that. It wasn't like they weren't getting a hit. They weren't touching
the ball. And he was doing it so easy. You see guys throwing hard like that,
but they're grunting and working hard. He looked like a natural."

Kuo made it look so easy that few realized he struck out the final batter
with an elbow that had blow out on the previous pitch.

"A scout told me that he could have pitched in the big leagues that night,
and he was only 17," said Dino Ebel, Kuo's manager at San Bernardino and now
the Angels' third-base coach. "But I remember that last at-bat, and he threw
a 98-mph fastball and stepped off and shook his arm a little. He struck the
guy out, but when he got back to the dugout he said he felt something."

Kuo said he actually heard something.
郭說他當時明確聽到手臂發出聲音。
"I heard it pop," he said. "It didn't hurt, but my arm felt weird. I didn't
throw a fastball the next pitch, I threw a curve and struck him out."
我聽到啪一聲，郭說。不會痛，但是感覺很怪。於是我下一球沒有拼速球，我丟了一記曲

Kuo's next appearance was on Dr. Frank Jobe's operating table for what would
be his first (and not last) Tommy John elbow reconstruction. He pitched in
only seven games each of the next two seasons, but the arm never felt right,
leading to an operation after the 2002 season to remove scar tissue.
郭泓志下一次露面就是在手術台動第一次湯米約翰手術，之後兩個球季他只出賽七場，但

During Spring Training in 2003, Kuo's rebuilt elbow ligament snapped again.
So Kuo became the second pitcher in the Dodgers' clubhouse to undergo a
second Tommy John procedure, joining Darren Dreifort. In 2004, Kuo pitched in
only three games and was shut down again.

Five years into his career, he had pitched in 18 games, undergone three
operations and considered quitting "every day," he said. The pain was
relentless and Kuo said, "I couldn't even remember what it felt like before
the first surgery. It hurt so bad after I threw that I just didn't want to
throw anymore."
總計五年下來，郭只出賽18場，經歷三次手術，然後郭說他當時每一天都想要放棄棒球生

But with encouragement from friends and particularly Minor League pitching
coach Marty Reed, Kuo kept at it. The discomfort persisted even early last
season, when Kuo opened as a starter at Class A Vero Beach. He moved into the
bullpen and around May, he said, the discomfort suddenly diminished.
但是朋友與小聯盟投手教練Marty Reed的鼓舞，讓郭泓志堅持下去。那種不舒服感在去年
球季初郭擔任Vero Beach 1A先發投手時還依然存在，於是他就轉為中繼投手，然後到了

Meanwhile, Kuo was overpowering opponents, earning a promotion to powerhouse
Double-A Jacksonville in July. After striking out 86 in 54 1/3 innings at the
two stops, he skipped Triple-A and jumped to the Major Leagues. He made nine
September appearances for the Dodgers, posted a 6.75 ERA, but struck out 10
in 5 1/3 innings. He appears to be the most dominant left-handed reliever the
Dodgers have developed since Steve Howe.
同時期，郭泓志變成難以擊倒的投手，於是七月份他就升到2A，1A加2A投了54又1/3局，K
掉86位打者，然後跳過3A直接晉升大聯盟。他在九月份為道奇出賽九場，防禦率6.75，5

After returning from the World Baseball Classic, Kuo was nearly unhittable in
spring games, overcoming his reputation for rehabs to make the Opening Day
staff.
在代表台灣打完世界經典大賽後，郭在春訓中的表現無與倫比，完全展現了復健的成果，
也因此進入了道奇開季的正選名單。
"All I knew about him was his injury history," said manager Grady Little.
"We're still well aware we have to protect him. We can't use him day in and
day out."
總教練Grady Little說對郭泓志的唯一印象是他受傷的歷史，因此現在對他仍然僅記我們
必須好好愛惜保護他。我們絕對不能過度使用他。
