這句話的原文：
"There are two tragedies in life. One is to lose your heart's desire. The othe

是來自蕭伯納創作於
1903年的劇本《凡人與超人》
（Man and Superman）
不過其實早在1892年
王爾德的《溫夫人的扇子》
（Lady Windermere's Fan: A Play About a Good Woman）
就有出現過類似的台詞：
"There are only two tragedies in life: one is not getting what one wants, and
the other is getting it."
在《凡人與超人》劇中
蕭伯納讓角色Mendoza
稍微更改引用了一下
王爾德的角色Dumby的台詞
然而 兩句台詞看似相仿
但還是有些許的不同
王爾德版本還有後續
"There are only two tragedies in life: one is not getting what one wants, and
the other is getting it. The last is much the worst; the last is a real traged
y!"
由此可見 王爾德認為
後者比前者來得更糟糕
因為當人們得到心之所欲
反而失去心中那股追求的熱忱
那是比起得不到
還要來得更悲劇淒慘的
在蕭伯納版本 則是認為
不管是得不到還是得到了
兩者都同樣悲劇
因為人生就是一場大悲劇
我們只能試著去接受它
比起白話的直譯
較喜歡以下的翻譯
反而更加精簡明瞭
人生悲劇有二：
一為所願不遂，另一為如願以償
