<方有毅>老師講解GRE OG 難題解題 (p.314 q. 16) (此題空有panache, gawkiness等難字) Belanger dances with an (i) ______ that draws one’s attention as if by seeking to (ii) ______ it; through finesse and understatement, he manages to seem at once intensely present and curiously detached. Blank (i) Blank (ii) (A) undemonstrative panache (D) focus (B) unrestrained enthusiasm (E) overwhelm (C) unattractive gawkiness (F) deflect 方老師講解:解題線索字(一)understatement 以及(二)as if, 兩個簡單字眼。 1.panache = dash or “flamboyance” in style and action 2. “ flamboyance” = the quality or state of being “flamboyant” = marked by or given to “strikingly” elaborate or colorful display or behavior = “ attracting attention” or notice through unusual or conspicuous qualities A. Belanger dances with an (i) something “attracting attention ” that draws one’s attention。 分號前說:Belanger 跳舞*with an (i) _______ 2. 分號後說:*through finesses and understatement, he (= Belanger) manages …. 也就是說:*with an (i) _______ 與 *through finesses and understatement 兩個介係詞片語的”語意邏輯必然是同向” 。 從沒有空格的平行結構finesses and understatement 兩個單字裡,作者強調的第二字, 挑選大部分同學看懂得的understatement當作解題線索--*understatement (M-W) :to state or present with “restraint” 節制 especially for effect *-- 使之與第一 空(i)_______ 的語意邏輯同向。 (錯) 故,答案只剩 (A)*undemonstrative panache 查M-W *undemonstrative: “restrained” 節制in expression of feeling : RESERVED 果然,與 *understatement ( “restraint” 節制) 吻合語意邏輯同向。 (二)as if 第二空as if by seeking to (ii) ______ it,這裡it = attention,可是因為前面說 as if by好像藉著_______,as if = as though用於“與事實相反的假設法”He walks as if he were drunk. 因此,搭配that draws one’s attention而造成的敘述as if by seeking to (ii) ______ it,必須第二空(ii) _________ it要填入 draws one’s attention “引人”注 意 的相反,即挑一個”轉移”注意的動詞即可。 (不是我們要的”轉移”注意,錯) (F) deflect 故第二空只剩(F) 查Collins Cobuild 字典http://www.mycobuild.com/Results.aspx 轉移,引開(批評、注意力等 *例句:It's a maneuver to “deflect the attention” of the people from what is really happening. 附註:此題可以避開panache, gawkiness (gawky : AWKWARD, CLUMSY *a gawky adolescent*) 等艱深的單字,只需understatement 及 as if 簡單字眼即可解出正確答 案。
