我把上下文套選項之後，
(A) one that they believe is a type previously unknown to science.
(B) one [that they believe it to be a type previously unknown to science].
刪掉。[ ]為不當形容詞子句 that＋不完整子句
(C) one [they believe (that it is of a type previously unknown to science)].
刪掉。[ ]為不當形容詞子句，無法修飾one。
若是當成名詞子句解，則文意不對。
(D) one [they believe (that is a type previously unknown to science)].
刪掉。理由同(C)
(E) one they believe to be of a type previously unknown to science.
剩下(A)(E) 我是用文意去選的。
因為one是explosion的同位語
explosion is a type 文意是不合理的。
explosion is of a type 才對。
就像
The dress is famous brand. 文意就不對。因為洋裝不等於品牌。
The dress is of famous brand. 才能表達：這件洋裝是『知名品牌的』。
The country is high latitude. 文意也不對，因為國家不等於高緯度。
The country is of high latitude. 才能表達：這國家是『高緯度的』。
所以題意應該是要表達，這是「一種前所未知的」explosion。有of才合理。
