一般來說 破折號 (dash) 可以直接當成逗號來看。
只是在使用上，如果是用 dash 而不用逗號的話，
通常 dash 後的句子會有某種程度上的強調作用
如果是一個子句夾在兩個 dash 中的話，那就是被包夾的子句被強調 or 帶有轉折語氣
怎麼說呢
在 Manhattan GMAT 上 Ron 是這樣解釋的
1) dashes can be used in the place of commas, to express some degree of
surprise or irony at the content of the modifier that is being set off.
這就是我上面說的，他可以取代逗號，然後和使用逗號的句子不同的地方是，
被包夾的子句有被強調 or 轉折語氣。
來看一個例子:
john, who is from las vegas, complained that winters in san francisco were cold
john—who is from alaska—complained that winters in san francisco were cold.
即便是從視覺效應上來說，第二句話的寫法和第一句比起來，都有很清楚的把
who is from alaska 強調出來!
但這邊強調/轉折的點是 阿拉斯加明顯的比舊金山冷多了。
一個在阿拉斯加長大的人來到舊金山竟然嫌冷不是有點靠北嗎! (這就是 Ron 說的 irony)
(2) dashes may also be used as a substitute for commas to set off a modifier
that NAMES people or things, especially if there is a LIST of such people
or things.
第二種用法是他可以帶出一個由一串名字 or 名稱所組成的字句。
這樣說應該有點太抽象，直接來看個例子。
The students—Jim, Marla, and Sara—were told they could leave.
The students, Jim, Marla, and Sara were told they could leave.
來看看上面這兩句話。其實這是一個滿好的例子，因為在這邊其實用dash 是滿必要的。
我們先來看第二句可以怎麼解釋
1) 有一群學生，加上 Jim, Maria, Sara 三個人被告知他們可以離開了。
2) Jim, Maria, Sara 這三個學生被告知他們可以離開了。
如果這裡不用dash 的話，整個句意就會變的有些 ambiguous 不知道是哪一個意思
相信大家一定都知道 GMAC 最討厭的就是 Ambiguity
所以用 dash 來表達會是個比較好的選擇
再來看另一個例子
The participants—two from group A and two from group B—tested negatively.
在這個例子中 使用了破折號
很快的就可以把 two from group A and two from group B 強調出來!
3) dash 一般來說還可以取代分號 (colon)
Students were asked to bring their own supplies—paper, pencils, and calculator.
