原句最後出現"had been supposed"，因此選項有現在完成式並無時態疑慮
主要考量有二:
1. determing代表伴隨語氣，但是按照原句和推論句意來看
examine和determine兩個動詞應該是以and連接的並列語氣為佳
2. when這個詞通常代表發生的"時間點"，此處用法不甚恰當
(E)的動詞形式，並列平衡和時態都是最佳選擇
