I don't use FreeBSD on laptops, but I've had much the same experience
with some older desktop hadware - newer FreeBSD's don't boot, with the
disk subsystem failing somewhere along the way.  The depressing part
was searching the bugs database and finding people reporting the exact
same problem on the same hardware when those systems had first been
released as -STABLE, and they still remained unfixed.

But this wasn't 64 vs 32 bit issue - this boxes were to old to run 64
bit code.
