I've been running into the same issue on my Alix boards, defining MALLOC_PRODUCTION in src.conf fixed it. Alternatively you can bump kmem size (cant remember the exact knob, basically what most ZFS tuning guides recommend), but this is less effective as mem usage is still way to high.
