Does your /boot/loader.conf have:

vfs.root.mountfrom="zfs:tank/root"
zfs_load="YES"

Does FreeBSD bootloader actually starts to load? (Do you get to FreeBSD
boot menu?)

Does your system pool use compression? Which compression?
