By the way, using 64bit (FreeBSD/amd64) can even be useful if you have less than 4 GByte RAM. For example if 32bit address space is not enough for your applications. In this case, not even PAE can help -- you _have_ to go 64bit. (In other words: PAE might enable you to use RAM >= 4 GB, but your processes will still be limited to 32bit address space.)
