Film Description and Director Biography
Woody Allen is one of the cinema’s greatest storytellers. His filmmaking
legacy extends back to classics like Annie Hall, Manhattan and Hannah and Her
Sisters; we laughed, longed and cringed along with the hilarious, searching
souls at their hearts, and it has been love ever since. Allen’s new film,
Cassandra’s Dream, is another wonderfully vigorous consideration of lust,
crime and identity, following satisfyingly on the heels of his recent Match
Point and Scoop. With the beguiling Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell in the
lead roles, this powerful work commands us fully from its opening shot. As
Terry (Farrell) and Ian (McGregor) bound down a marina gangplank at the film’
s outset, we instantly grasp the brotherly affection and years of scrapping
and striving these two close but very different siblings share. Terry works
in an auto-body shop and is recovering from struggles with liquor and
gambling. Ian is clean-cut, ambitious and tired of helping their dear old dad
manage his restaurant. He wants to move to California to become a resort
owner and hopes ultra-sexy actress Angela (Hayley Atwell) will want to come
along with him.
The brothers manage to scrape together enough dough to buy a sailboat, then
contentedly take their girls out for cruises and muse about how rosy their
prospects look. They know they can always count on Howard (a robust,
perfectly crafted turn by Tom Wilkinson, who also appears in Michael
Clayton), their benevolent, jet-setting uncle who is always good for a favour
and never asks for anything in return. At least, not until now. Howard
arrives in town in an uncharacteristic panic; he’s embroiled in some nasty
legal business, and he needs his loyal nephews to save the day. Trouble is,
the favour he requests is far from legal. It will ultimately pit Terry and
Ian against each other the way only shared guilt can.
Cassandra’s Dream has a whole lot of swagger and a whole lot of brains.
Allen winds the coil of this drama tighter and tighter, leading us to a
conclusion of startling emotional strength. McGregor and Farrell obviously
enjoy themselves immensely, sinking their teeth into what begins as a
spirited tale of ambition, only to reverse with breathtaking ease into
sinister noir.
Woody Allen was born in Brooklyn, New York. In 1966, he launched a prolific
career in film by writing, directing and starring in What’s Up, Tiger Lily?
He has won three Academy AwardsR and been nominated for eighteen more.
