Re: [Talk] Why Taiwanese can't master English i …
Actually, indefinite Taiwanese students spend over ten years,
from junior high school to university or even graduate school,
to learn English. But except some people who ever studied
abroad or majored in English department of university, most
of Taiwanese adult can’t use English well.
In my opinion, Taiwanese English lecture in high school doesn’t
make sense. First, teacher doesn’t teach English in English,
but in Chinese! Second, teacher never gives student enough
opportunity to practice English speaking at once. Third, because
of the former two problems, student only memorize some English
vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar rules written by textbooks
in Chinese. They also still only know how to fill the questions
blank in text sheet, but can’t finish a personal letter correctly
or discuss some issues with people in English fluently. How
ridiculous it is!
What’s wrong? Why can’t we just practice the basic speaking,
listening, reading, writing more time and use it in real life,
rather than be addicted to those tricky grammar quizzes?
(like the saying of Professor Chia-Tung, Lee李家同)
Are the students who can’t use English well dumb? No, many
of them are smart, get high score in professional subject or
graduated from top schools.
Our English lecturers and administration should be careful
what they have done.
