看你改變上下文，你可以用（完成或所謂“簡單”的）過去式：
She once dreaded the moment when she would have to fire him or any
but she later understood that it had to be done.
(once dreaded => 曾經畏懼)
你也可以用過去未完成時態：
She used to dread the moment when she would have to fire him,
at least until she saw how bad he was at his job.
(used to dread => 從前畏懼)
She would dread the moment when she would have to fire him,
then would take a deep breath and feel better.
(would dread => 過去一向畏懼)
你也可以用虛擬語氣的過去式跟條件語氣：
If she were more sensitive, she would dread the moment
when she would have to fire him, but since she isn't, she can handle it.
(would dread => 就會畏懼)
