今天看到兩個句子，不是很懂which的用法，想請教大家

, the last of which peaked是形容詞子句嗎? which是代表什麼?
另外一句也是which的地方不是很了解
They found the number of species was greatest at or around such sites, which
the scientists said reflected volcanoes' role as ice age refuges.
, which the scientists是什麼子句? 這邊的which是代表前面的整句話嗎?從They到sites
