這題選C沒錯。
in不能省，因為 direction (n)方向 前面要用介系詞 in。
which direction 就是哪個方向，which (a)哪個
所以 in which direction 表示"在哪個方面"
幫你換個位子：
we know to proceed to try to obtain the answer "in which direction"
注意：這個which是形容詞不是關代!!

: 這個句子的known 前面應該有個which is/was 被省略掉了,但我想問which指的是Peter…
: ..temperatures這一件事情?還是指method?還是指temperatures?

這裡的which 當然是修飾前面得先行詞"temperatures"
也就是科學理所認知的溫度!!
注意：形容詞子句簡化形容詞片語，which were一起省略。
