1. 'Despite'就是一個介詞.在每一個介詞之後只能寫一個名詞短語.
'not being a brilliant child'是一個句子變名詞短語(NP).
例如:
句子: Mike is not a brilliant child.
名詞短語: [Mike's] not being a brilliant child
(不用寫'Mike's'限定詞短語.)
(V) Despite NP, Mike studies hard to be the top student.
(V) Despite this fact, Mike studies hard to be the top student.
(V) Despite [Mike's] not being a brilliant child, Mike studies hard
to be the top student.
(X) Despite *[Mike is not] a brilliant child*, Mike studies hard to be
the top student.
'Although'就是一個"從屬連詞,"所以需要一個句子.
(1.1) Mike is not a brilliant child. Mike studies hard to be the top student.
(1.2) Although [Mike is not] a brilliant child, Mike studies hard to be the top
student.
2. 正式的解釋太長.代替那個解釋,我給你一些有關的例子:
'Seat'的意思說'使...坐下.'
The host seats the guest.
於是...
The host is seating. (不過這個句子有奇怪的用法!)
The guest is seated.
(2) [As the man was] seated on the couch, the man began to watch TV
with popcorn.
(2.1) The man was seated on the couch. The man began to watch TV
with popcorn.
(2.2) The man was seated on the couch. The man began NP. The man watched
TV with popcorn.
(2.3) The man was seated. The man began NP. The man watched TV.
'Sit'的意思說'坐下.'
(2) [As the man] was sitting on the couch, the man began to watch TV
with popcorn.
(2.1) The man was sitting on the couch. The man began to watch TV
with popcorn.
(2.2) The man was sitting on the couch. The man began NP. The man watched
TV with popcorn.
(2.3) The man was seated. The man began NP. The man watched TV.
