請問各位英文高手
下面的一句英文該如何翻譯?即使我查了每個字的意思,仍是拼湊不出它的意思
我查過兩個人的解釋,但意思完全不一樣...希望有人可以幫我解答一下問題
前文大概是說:"僕人對於主人在房間裡用餐覺得很奇怪,但並沒有表示任何異議"
接著下一句是"and they began to put a serious dent in the food nicked from the
kitchen."
一個解釋是說:此暗喻廚房的食物快沒了-->由"a serious dent in the food"推測出來
(但我對此懷疑...若真是如此,文章感覺有點不通@.@)
另一個解釋是:從廚房端來長桌和一串碟碟碗碗
這個好像比較合理,可是我有個疑問,"a serious dent in the food nicked"很直接的翻譯
到底是什麼意思?它真的比喻又是指什麼?又它如何可以活用在甚麼句子中?(如真有暗指什
麼)
