在整個主詞片語 many of them 裡，many 是核心，of them 介詞片語修飾 many。
原則上，動詞要和核心主詞一致。這裡剛好 many 必為複數所以看不出複數動詞是跟哪
個字一致。

: a number of 是形容詞片語
同樣地，number 是核心，雖然根據原則，動詞一般和核心產生一致，但有少數表示數量
的字後面加 of 名詞時，動詞反而是跟 of 後的名詞一致，如 lot（表數量時）、
number、rest：
A lot of money was wasted.
A lot of things were wasted.
The rest of the meat is over there.
The rest of the eggs are over there.
A number of students were there. (a number of 只能接複數名詞)
以上這些例子屬於少數例外。大多時候，動詞還是跟核心一致的：
A box of letters was stolen.
Two bags of sugar were used.
etc.
不過，最後還是要說，以上只是說明一個通例、原則，實際用法時，視說話者想強調
整體還是個別，會有不同的用法。
