Ving有表示主動意味
也就是 the escaping ammonia
暗示著 the ammonia which escapes (freezes the water...)
同樣地 a crying baby (= a baby that was crying)
相反地 a stolen bust (= a bust which is stolen)

: 答案為C ,經討論過後,是說表結果所以選(C) ,另不能選連接詞

我的看法是此句話為分詞構句
studies indicate..., and made it... (主詞相同的分詞構句)
或是
studies indicate..., which made it... (which刪去後，後面動詞用ving)
上面第二個說法我不確定是否可行，有請其他高手指教
: 4.The hurricane, coming as it did, took the Florida coastal community
: ____
: by surprise.

: 這題想請問,在這句裡,by如何解釋? 若不是被動, 動詞took的用法正確嗎?

有時不知道用法時可以先查字典試試看看 (純建議)

同樣為分詞構句的概念，(簡單說句子用了分詞構句後and連接詞就不用了)
建議用google搜尋分詞構句(或分詞句構更多)，會有很多詳細解釋
或是買本書回來看看
