Since the operating temperature of solar cells in the field can vary over
wide extremes, it is necessary to understand the effect of temperature on
performance. The Isc of solar cells is not strongly
temperature-dependant.Increased temperature reduces the Eg and increases the
IL, since lower energy photons can be absorbed. However, the other cell
parameters, the Voc and the FF, both decrease.
Qualitatively, as temperature is increased, the population of electron, ni,
increase exponentially, increasing the dark saturation current I0. The
increased dark current reduces Voc.
The dominant variation is that of Voc. This causes the power output and
efficiency to decrease with increasing temperature.
