John Marmet
A Holmes County man will have a key role in the miniseries.
Sledge, whose book, With the Old Breed, provided much of
the in-depth look into the war in the Pacific, was under
the command of Platoon Sergeant John Marmet. Now 90 years
old and a resident at the Holmes County Home, Marmet
entered the Marines as a wide-eyed 20-year-old. By the time
he was 22, Marmet had earned a great deal of respect from
both his superiors and the men who served under him.
一位來自於 Holmes 郡的人 (指John Marmet) 將會在這部迷你影集
中扮演著重要的角色。Sledge，他的著作 "With the Old Breed"
為太平洋群島的戰爭經過提供了深入的解讀，他當時就是副排
(Platoon Sergeant) John Marmet 的領導之下。

Platoon Sergeant 在美軍編制是職位，用以輔佐排長 (Platoon
Commander)
帶領排級單位。階級有可能是上士(E6)，也可能是士官長(E7)。
如 Generation Kill 中，Nate 排長的排附就是士官長階。

隨著無數的青年在 K 連中來來去去，雖然才 22 歲，但他三年的

譯註:
作者用年紀: 22 歲與 Old Breed 對比，Old Breed 並加上定冠詞
專指 Sledge 著作。戰時的兵力耗損，造成許多年青人在 K 連中
來來去去，即便 22 歲而已，但是三年的資歷，已經是 K 連中的
骨幹，也就成為了 Sledge 戰後出版的回憶錄 The Old Breed 中
描寫的對象之一。
Sledge was one of those men, and as Marmet describes him,
Sledge was a wonderful kid who was scared to death. “I
told him to hang on to my coattails and I’d get him
through this,” said Marmet, in a recent interview. “He
darn near wore my shirt out, but we got through it.”
Sledge 也是那批年輕人之一，而且 Marmet 形容他是個很棒的孩
子，嚇得半死(的孩子)。Marmet 在一個最近的訪談上說：
「我告訴他緊跟著我，我會帶領他度過這一切。他還真他娘的差點
把我的衣服磨破，但是我們真的撐過來了。」
譯註:
Marmet 的話是誇飾法，因為他見到 Sledge 時，Sledge 是個可愛
的年輕人，但是怕得要死。所以他說了這些話安慰他，要他緊跟著
他這個排附，他會罩他對了。結果 Sledge 也真的照做，所以可以
活著離開太平洋戰區，活到戰後。
hang on to one's coattails:
是一句俚語，以誇飾法形容，緊跟著某個成功人士的步伐以獲取成功。
並不是 Sledge 真的要抓著 Marmet 排附的衣角。真的這樣子演出來
的話，就很像...Prison Break 裡面的 T-Bag 翻口袋給小跟班拉。

He darn near wore my shirt out.
darn 其實就是指 damn(天殺的，他娘的) 這個發語詞，但是正式
的文章或是電視影集播出時，通常會用諧音帶過。如 Fuck 以 Frak/
Frack 代替。(Frak 出自於 Battlestar Glactica 星際大爭霸)
這句話，也呼應了 Marmet 一開始講的 "衣著" 誇飾法。
Sledge came under Marmet’s command at Russell Island at
the age of 17. It was Marmet who dubbed him Sledgehammer —
almost all servicemen got a nickname (Marmet’s was Big
John) — and was immediately taken under the wing of his
commanding officer.
Sledge 17 歲時，在 Russell 群島加入 Marmet 麾下。Marmet
幫他取了 Sledgehammer (大榔頭) 的綽號，當時幾乎所有的軍
人都會有一個綽號，Marmet 他的綽號是 Big John (大約翰)。
