Try compiling up a kernel with polling support. The VR device does support polling. That might get it to work. Another option is to stick in a PCI ethernet card, which is actually what I do on my shuttle to get GigE speeds. My AMD64 shuttle is a FN85 which has the NVidia chipset (so, nv0 rather then vr0). -Matt
